The sixtieth session of the Human Rights Council is underway at the United Nations in Geneva. Thousands of diplomats gather for discussions on global human rights. The Chinese delegation organized a side event under the theme "leaving nobody behind". Julia Lyubova reports from Geneva.
JULIA LYUBOVA, Geneva "A side event of the 60th session of the Human Rights Council, titled 'Equality, Human Rights, and Inclusive Development,' was held at the UN in Geneva. It was hosted by the China NGO Network for International Exchanges, part of the Chinese delegation for this session of the UNHRC. The focus of the event was on the efforts of NGOs and international institutions in advancing equality and eliminating discriminatory practices. The panel of speakers included experts from China, Venezuela, the UK, India and other countries. The speakers discussed the latest developments for the Global Development Initiative."
HAO YUAN, Assistant Researcher, China NGO Network for International Exchanges "A common development is one of our core goals. And we also want to create the bridge and to make more and more people and organizations to have these common goals to push the development and leave no one behind."
VIVIAN WONG, Member, Kowloon City District Council, Hong Kong SAR "One of the major challenges is getting all the countries together. Obviously we're in the United Nations here, so one of the things we need to do is actually to hold hands together, to make sure we're actually working towards the goal. We're seeing a lot of diversions recently, so hopefully we'll all get back on track sooner or later."
The experts shared their thoughts on global sustainable development and the United Nations' SDGs. Another theme was how civil society actors globally can work together and respect international law. Participants also discussed how to address hunger, poverty, discrimination, the rights of women, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities and rural populations. Julia Lyubova, CGTN, Geneva.
