Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has stressed the need to continuously deepen the full-chain supervision of food safety and improve supervision quality and effectiveness through strict management and governance.

Zhang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks in a speech delivered at the main event of the 2026 national food safety publicity week held in Beijing on Tuesday.

He emphasized the importance of seamless supervision across all stages, such as production, storage, transportation and sales, urging platform enterprises, testing bodies and certification institutions to strictly fulfill their responsibilities to ensure food quality, safety and reliability.

Zhang called for stronger source risk control, stricter regulation of food additive use, and firm prevention of substandard food reaching consumers. He also stressed intensified targeted inspections and sampling in key food safety sectors and weak points, as well as enhanced regulation of emerging business models, including online food ordering, live-stream sales and community group buying.
