The Institute for Global South Development and Human Rights at the University of International Business and Economics is established under the School of International Development and Cooperation. Operating under the model of “one institution with two names,” it is a National Human Rights Education and Training Base (under cultivation). Drawing on UIBE’s distinctive strengths in internationalized education and South-South cooperation, the Institute focuses on human rights theory research, discourse construction, exchange and cooperation, education and training, and policy consultation. It is committed to advancing the development of China’s human rights disciplinary, academic, and discourse systems, and to making active contributions to enhancing China’s international influence in human rights discourse.

Guided by the core concept of “prioritizing the right to development,” the Institute focuses on three major areas: human rights theory and practice with Chinese characteristics, development and human rights in the Global South, and human rights discourse systems in developing countries. By integrating high-quality multidisciplinary resources from economics, law, political science, and other fields, the Institute has developed a distinctive interdisciplinary research profile. Its team is deeply engaged in innovation in human rights theory and the systematic review of practical experience, with a focus on summarizing China’s path and experience in human rights development, exploring human rights protection approaches suited to the realities of developing countries, exploring an alternative to the Western human rights discourse, and building a human rights narrative system for developing countries that combines local cultural characteristics with international communication capacity. The Institute has established a sound organizational structure and management system. It  is supported by a well-structured and professionally complementary research and administrative team and enjoys stable research and office facilities, providing solid support for theoretical research, talent cultivation, and international cooperation.

Relying on UIBE’s strong foundation in internationalized education, the Institute has long carried out multi-level talent cultivation and human rights education and training for countries in the Global South. Through international education, foreign aid training programs, and other diverse forms, it has built a broad international cooperation network and cultivated interdisciplinary talent with both a global development perspective and human rights literacy, thereby helping to enhance the human rights governance and sustainable development capacities of developing countries. In academic research and think tank services, the Institute closely aligns with national strategic needs, continuously conducts frontier research and field studies in the field of human rights, and actively provides high-quality policy advisory outputs on major issues such as the development of China’s human rights and international development cooperation, effectively serving as a professional think tank. The Institute also actively expands international exchanges and cooperation, maintains regular engagement with overseas universities, research institutions, and international organizations, and participates deeply in international human rights academic seminars and global governance dialogues. Through diverse communication channels, it tells China’s human rights story well and disseminates human rights concepts and practical achievements with Chinese characteristics.

Looking ahead, the Institute will take the development of the National Human Rights Education and Training Base as an opportunity to continue deepening research, education, public outreach, and international cooperation on human rights in the Global South. It will further improve its talent cultivation system, expand channels for international exchange, and strive to contribute Chinese wisdom and UIBE strength to promoting a fairer and more equitable global human rights governance system and advancing the human rights cause in the Global South.
