Several Chinese cities have recently introduced financial incentives to encourage marriage and childbearing, with rewards and subsidies reaching as high as 200,000 yuan (around $28,130). The measures are part of local efforts to build a more fertility-friendly society.

In east China's Zhejiang Province, Ningbo City announced on Oct. 27 that it would distribute marriage consumption vouchers worth 1,000 yuan per couple to newlyweds who register between Oct. 28 and Dec. 31 this year. The vouchers can be used for wedding-related expenses such as photography, ceremonies, accommodation, and dining.

Other cities in Zhejiang have introduced similar programs. Hangzhou is offering couples 10 vouchers worth 1,000 yuan for marriage-related purchases, while Keqiao District in Shaoxing City launched "wedding gift vouchers" to help reduce the cost of getting married and stimulate the "sweet economy." Pujiang County in Jinhua City has also begun distributing 800-yuan vouchers to eligible newlyweds for wedding services and hospitality consumption.

Beyond Zhejiang, other provinces are also stepping up marriage incentives. Starting January 1, 2025, Lüliang City in Shanxi Province has provided a 1,500-yuan cash reward to couples registering their first marriage, with the female partner aged 35 or below.

Some local communities have gone even further. In Nangang Village, Baiyun District of Guangzhou City, and in Hengli Town of Dongguan, Guangdong Province, first-time married couples who are village shareholders may receive combined marriage and childbirth subsidies of up to 200,000 yuan, including bonuses for both marriage and childbearing.

Local authorities say these measures are aimed at easing the financial burden of marriage and childbirth, promoting modern marriage customs, and fostering a social environment supportive of family life.
