A senior Chinese diplomat said China is willing to participate in improving global human rights governance and jointly promote the healthy development of the global human rights cause on the basis of mutual respect and equality.

Chen Xu, China's permanent representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, made the remarks on Tuesday while delivering a speech at the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Noting this year marks the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the global governance nowadays still faces severe challenges, Chen said the China-proposed Global Governance Initiative aims to promote the development of the international order in a more just and reasonable direction.

The Chinese diplomat detailed China's three positions in human rights governance during his speech.

China advocated for abiding by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, respecting the sovereignty of all countries and their right to independently choose their path of human rights development and opposing interference in internal affairs under the pretext of human rights, Chen said, adding that China supports the just cause of the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights.

Noting there is no one-size-fits-all path of human rights development in the world, Chen said China advocated for the diversity of world civilizations, promoted human rights through dialogue and cooperation, and firmly opposed unilateralist acts such as unilateral coercive measures.

China also advocated for a people-centered approach, said the Chinese diplomat.

Acknowledging that people are the participants and beneficiaries of global governance, Chen said it is important to recall the original aspiration of the UN Human Rights Council to promote and protect human rights, attach equal importance to and balance the advancement of all human rights and accelerate the implementation of economic, social and cultural rights as well as the right to development.

The 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council opened on September 8 in Geneva, Switzerland, and is scheduled to conclude on October 8.
