Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi sent a written message to the Hernán Santa Cruz Dialogue on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights on Monday, in which he underscored the increasing global tensions and shortcomings in human rights governance, urging the international community to promote human rights through development and cooperation.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, welcomed participants to the dialogue in Hangzhou. The dialogue is jointly held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Acknowledging the profound global transformations, including escalating geopolitical conflicts, sluggish economic recovery and widening gaps in human rights governance, Wang emphasized the importance of ensuring equal access to economic, social and cultural rights for all in today's global context.
He said that to realize human rights for all, it's important to uphold true multilateralism, respect countries' independent choice of human rights development path, and enhance dialogue and cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual respect.
He added that it's also important to strengthen global solidarity and coordination, and increase the support to developing countries from developed countries to make sure that no one is left behind.
The foreign minister praised China's practices of human rights, saying China is committed to putting people first and has found a path of human rights development that is in line with the trend of the times and suits its national conditions.
"Historic achievements have been made in China's human rights cause, and the protection of ESCR (economic, social and cultural rights) has reached new heights," Wang said.
He also commended the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China held in July, saying it draws a blueprint for further comprehensively deepening reform to advance Chinese modernization and will provide favorable conditions for the equal enjoyment of ESCR by Chinese people at a higher level.
Wang concluded by affirming that China will continue to work with all countries and UN agencies to pursue the common values of humanity, advocate safeguarding human rights with security, promoting human rights with development, and advancing human rights with cooperation, to contribute to sound and sustainable development of the global human rights cause.
