Abstract: What are linguistic rights and how can scholars of language studies help enrich the general notion of human rights for a better world? This paper examines the inter-relationships between linguistic rights and human rights as universal concepts before applying them to the African context. It outlines various approaches that are being taken by African actors to use technology, especially internet technology, to promote the revitalization of indigenous languages of Africa. Then it points to how Africa and other parts of the world, such as Austria and China, can learn from each other in promoting indigenous languages under the aegis of the United Nations’ Decade of Indigenous Languages, 2022 to 2032.
