China has postponed start of new school semester and encouraged students to study at home over safety concerns as the country fights a novel coronavirus outbreak that has infected over 40,000 people.

The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) opened its 43rd regular session in Geneva, Feb. 24, 2020. China says it welcomes UN human rights chief to visit Xinjiang  

Chen Xu, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva, said on Feb. 26 that the country welcomes UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet to visit its northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region this year.
 
Speaking at the 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, Chen said the Chinese government has received in Xinjiang over 1,000 diplomats, international organization officials, reporters and religious leaders of various countries, adding that China is willing to invite people to visit the region to see its development with their own eyes.

China has submitted reports six times for the implementation of the Convention against Torture and conducted constructive dialogues with the UN Committee against Torture, and China’s determination to fight against torture is unwavering, a Chinese envoy said on Feb. 28.
 
During the interactive dialogue with the UN special rapporteur on torture at the 43rd session of the Human Rights Council, Liu Hua, special representative for human rights of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, reiterated that China opposes torture.

International symposium on anti-terrorism, de-radicalization and human rights held in Geneva
 
The international symposium on anti-terrorism, de-radicalization and human rights protection was held in Geneva on March 2 during the on-going 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council. China and other countries exchanged experiences of counter-terrorism and de-radicalization and discussed effective ways of enhancing international cooperation at the symposium.
 
The international symposium was jointly sponsored by the Mission of China to UN at Geneva, the Mission of Cameron to UN at Geneva, and the China Society for Human Rights Studies (CSHRS). Assistants to the special mechanism of the Human Rights Council, representatives of non-governmental organizations and officials of permanent missions of Cambodia, Britain, Mexico, Malaysia, Syria, Algeria, Serbia, Qatar, Laos, Niger and other countries attended this symposium.

A recent official plan requires each prefecture-level city to build at least one standardized medical waste disposal facility by the end of this year, an official said on March 10.
