The Process of Dialogue and Universality

Francisco Granja de Almeida

Abstract: In 1999, human rights theorist Bhikhu Parekh argued that universal values arise from an uncoerced cross-cultural dialogue. In 1994, philosopher Robert Brandom argued that communication is about sharing a cooperative practice rather than sharing meanings and social epistemologist Helen Longino argued that consensus comes from an interactive dialogic community. This reaction paper recalls these and other authors to stress the relevance of considering cross-cultural dialogue as a self-sufficient practice of universality.

Key words: universality; cross-cultural dialogue; consensus ; practice of communication
