BEIJING, Dec. 27, 2018 -- Chinese lawmakers have called for better protection on peasants' interests in contracted rural land.
The suggestion was raised Tuesday at a penal deliberation on a draft revision to the law on rural land contracting, which was submitted to the ongoing session of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee for its third reading.
Wu Heng, a member of the committee, said it was crucial for the draft to highlight women's equal rights in rural land contracting and safeguard the rural land contracting rights of peasants that have migrated to cities.
Lyu Shiming, another member, also called for special arrangements to protect the contracting rights of vulnerable groups including the handicapped and children.
Committee member Liu Haixing stressed the right to obtain contracted rural land of newly added family members in villages through marriage.
China's current law on contracting rural land was adopted in 2002 and amended in 2009.
