China launches legal assistance pilot program for all defendants


China has launched a pilot program to ensure every criminal defendant has ac- cess to a defense lawyer for their trial.


The Supreme People’s Court and the Ministry of Justice jointly released a docu- ment On Oct. 11 which stipulates that if a defendant has not retained a lawyer himself/ herself, the court should inform legal assistance agencies to appoint a defence counsel for the defendant.

China reports lowest urban unemployment rate since 2008: official


The registered unemployment rate in Chinese cities stood at 3.95 percent at the end of the third quarter, the lowest level since 2008, official data showed.

China created 10.97 million jobs in the first nine months, 300,000 more than the same period last year, the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MHRSS) announced on Nov. 1, 2017.

With 28 counties casting off poverty this year, China shortened its list of poorest counties for the first time in more than 30 years, a concrete step toward delivering on the country’s goal of completely eliminating poverty by 2020.

China to achieve “zero poverty” goal: UNDP official


Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, China has made great achievements in poverty alleviation. More than 60 million people have been lifted out of poverty and poverty occurence has declined from 10.2 percent to less than 4 percent.

Veres, Country Director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), said over the past 30 years China’s economy has witnessed rapid growth and China has made great contribution to poverty reduction both home and abroad. From 2013 to 2016, more than 10 million rural residents shook off poverty each year. China is on the way towards a “zero poverty” country.
