U.S. announces withdrawal from UN Human Rights Council
U.S. leaves UN human rights body amid criticism
The United States announced its withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council on June 19. The exit marks the latest US departure from multinational organizations and treaties after it pulled out of the Paris climate accord, the UN global compact on migration, the UN culture and education body UNESCO, as well as the Iran nuclear deal. The withdrawal once again highlights Washington's disregard of the UN's authority and objectives. Its appetite for setting deadlines for multilateral consultations and threatening to exit them have, unsurprisingly, met with cold shoulders even among its allies.
