China issues white paper on human rights
March, 1997 -- China published a white paper to show the marked progress in its human rights protection efforts in the year 1996, detailing the progress the country has made in protecting  people's rights to subsistence and development, citizens' democratic rights, the judicial guarantee for human rights, workers' rights, citizens' rights to receive education, legitimate rights and interests of women and children, as well as the guarantee of the rights of ethnic minorities.

"The human rights conditions maintained a good momentum of continuous improvement and promised further progress," says the white paper, published by the State Council Information Office under the title "Progress in China's Human Rights Cause in 1996.
