Xinjiang sees better water quality
 
The water environment in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has been improved, the local ecology and environment authority said on June 2.
 
Thanks to the strengthened management and supervision of surface water and sewage discharge, 94.5 percent of Xinjiang's surface water sections being assessed registered excellent quality in 2021, an increase of 3 percentage points over the previous year.

China allocates 30m yuan to Sichuan for earthquake relief
 
China on June 2 earmarked 30 million yuan ($4.47 million) of its central disaster-relief budget for the southwestern province of Sichuan, after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Ya'an city in the province.
 
The emergency funds, allocated by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Emergency Management, will be used to support local disaster relief efforts.

UN biodiversity leader praises China's environmental achievements
 
China has achieved inspiring and remarkable outcomes in fighting climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, said Elizabeth Maruma Mrema, executive secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, on June 5.

The Work Safety Committee of China's State Council has stepped up supervision on risk-control efforts across the country to ensure workplace safety, the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) told a press conference on June 9.

69 countries say no to interference in China's internal affairs
 
A group of countries said on June 14 that issues concerning Xinjiang, Hong Kong and Tibet are China's internal affairs, expressing opposition to politicization of human rights, double standards and interference in China's internal affairs under the pretext of human rights.
 
In a joint statement read by Cuba on behalf of 69 cross-regional countries at the ongoing 50th session of the UN Human Rights Council, these countries said that respect for sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of states and non-interference in internal affairs of sovereign states represent basic norms governing international relations.

Chinese courts increasingly handling cases online
 
Chinese courts heard cases online nearly 1.3 million times last year, up 37.64 percent year-on-year, a report said on June 14.
 
The report, which was jointly issued by the Institute of Law with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and China's Social Sciences Academic Press, lauded the achievement made by courts nationwide in promoting online trials to overcome travel difficulties during the COVID-19 epidemic.

China cuts carbon emissions per unit of GDP by half from 2005
 
China has made great achievements in carbon reduction, with its carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP in 2021 plunging by 50.3 percent from 2005, an official said on June 15.
 
Last year, the share of coal in China's total energy-consumption mix dropped to 56 percent from 72.4 percent in 2005, Vice Minister of Ecology and Environment Zhao Yingmin said at a National Low-carbon Day activity.

China calls on countries to work together to counter hate speech
 
Zhang Jun, China's permanent representative to the United Nations (UN), on June 20 called on all countries to conduct dialogues and join hands to combat hate speech.
 
Zhang made the remarks at an informal high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly to mark the commemoration of the first International Day for Countering Hate Speech.
 
In a resolution proposed by China and others, the UN General Assembly in July 2021 proclaimed June 18 as the International Day for Countering Hate Speech.

Campaign aims to promote mental health of seniors
 
China will launch a nationwide campaign this year aimed at promoting the mental health of seniors aged above 65, the National Health Commission said on June 20.
 
The campaign, expected to run through 2025, will cover 1,000 communities in urban areas and 1,000 rural villages. It will primarily serve seniors who are poor, disabled, live alone, have been left behind in the country side, or who have lost their only child.

The enactment and enforcement of the "Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act" by the U.S. serve to escalate American suppression against China under the guise of human rights, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. Millions of children benefiting from nutrition programs
 
As of the end of last year, about 13.7 million babies in previously impoverished areas in China have benefited from a nationwide program aimed at improving their nutrition, the National Health Commission said on June 27.
 
The commission initiated the program in 2012 to provide micronutrient sachets for infants and young children aged 6 months to 2 years in impoverished areas. The food supplement package contains essential proteins, vitamins and minerals to counter malnutrition, and its Chinese name, Ying Yang Bao, has been recognized by international organizations.

China on June 27 delivered a joint statement together with over 90 countries at the 50th session of the UN Human Rights Council, highlighting the importance of promoting and protecting economic, social and cultural rights within the context of addressing inequalities in the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
 
Delivering the joint statement at the session, Chen Xu, head of the Chinese Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, said that by compounding the existing socio-economic challenges, COVID-19 has enlarged the structural inequalities within and among states, and those in vulnerable and marginalized situations disproportionately bearing the brunt of the negative impacts.
