Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday urged the nation to intensify its efforts to develop vocational education.[page]

Xi said vocational education is an important part of both the national educational system and developing a skilled labor force, in an instruction to a two-day national work conference on vocational education, which was convened on Monday.

He stressed vocational education must be valued because it is an important path for young people to achieve success and could stimulate employment and start-ups as well as foster technical skills.

A bi-monthly session of China's top legislature opened on Monday with bills on food safety and speedy trials for minor offenses on the table.

Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, presided over the opening meeting of the session, which runs from Monday through Friday.

A draft revision to the food safety law was submitted for first reading. It is the first proposed revision of the law since it took effect in 2009.[page]

China launched a campaign on Friday to rid the Internet of audio and video materials that promote terrorism and violence.

The move is aimed at safeguarding social stability in China's western Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and long-term peace, according to a statement from the State Internet Information Office.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to harshly crack down on drug-related crimes and to contain the spread of drugs.

In a written instruction made public on Wednesday ahead of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking which falls on June 26, Xi called on authorities to be aware of the danger of drugs and adopt forceful measures to wipe them out.

China still faces a grave situation in drug control, Xi wrote, adding that drug taking, trafficking, planting and manufacturing should all be targeted amid comprehensive measures to control drugs.[page]

China will endeavor to build a comprehensive, transparent and efficient fiscal and tax system by deepening reforms in the coming years, the central leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said on Monday.

Priorities include improving management and supervision of government budgets, facilitating the building of a comprehensive, well-regulated and transparent modern budget system and optimizing the tax system, said a statement released after a meeting of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, presided over by its general secretary, Xi Jinping.
